Newcastle United are set to be without Anthony Gordon in the Carabao Cup final vs Liverpool.
The Magpies face Liverpool at Wembley on March 16th, with kickoff set for 4.30pm GMT.
Eddie Howe’s side secured their place in the final thanks to a 4-0 aggregate win over Arsenal in the last round.
Meanwhile, Liverpool booked their place in the final thanks to a 4-1 aggregate win over Tottenham.
The Reds are looking to win the EFL Cup crown for the tenth time in their history, having won it three times in the last four seasons, while Newcastle are looking to win their first major domestic trophy since 1955.
However, the Magpies have been handed a big blow in their quest as star winger Gordon has been ruled out for the final.
Gordon received his marching orders in the 83rd minute of Newcastle’s eventual 2-1 extra-time defeat to Brighton at St.
James’ Park.
The England international was dismissed for violent conduct after pushing Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the face, resulting in an automatic three-match suspension that includes the Wembley showpiece on March 16.
Newcastle wanted to challenge the decision, and Eddie Howe confirmed that the club would appeal if necessary.
“Of course.
If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation,” the Newcastle manager said after the game.
“I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it.”
“But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”
“He plays hard – I want him to play hard, I want him to be competitive, but I don’t see an issue there at this moment.”
A successful appeal would have reduced Gordon’s suspension, giving him a chance to potentially play in the Carabao Cup.
However, it has now been confirmed that club have decided against appealing the red card, meaning that the initial three-game ban stands and Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup final.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie confirmed the news, stating that “Newcastle will not appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton on Sunday.”
